Final Post

 I am so excited to present my final project tomorrow. I have worked so hard to create my design boards. I cannot wait to show everyone how much I have learned during my time with my mentor. This project was actually my mentors' idea. She wanted to create a project that had me thinking about my future and not so much my past. It made me realize how soon college really is and that my time in high school is over. I decided to do design boards because it is a great way to illustrate your findings and creative eye. Since I obviously cannot demolish and redesign all of the dorm rooms at my college, this was the next best option. Overall, this project went really well for me. I have been super organized and on top of all the work that was required to complete this project. I also had a great time with my mentor. We get along really well, so it was easy to work with her. Looking back at my Pre-Project Blog, I was very excited to work on my secret project, as well as some rooms in my own house. The secret project was my model dorm room project. Which was exciting as I had anticipated. I also got to help pick some design elements for my brothers' bathroom. That being said, I would say my hopes and expectations for my project were exceeded. I learned so much about the process of designing a space, and truly how much time it takes. It took me three full weeks to just create design boards. Being an interior designer requires a lot of skill, patience, and the ability to make decisions. Technology plays a huge role in the creation of floor plans as well. On top of all that, having an understanding of human psychology also really helps in this field. Being able to understand and read people is a very helpful skill when creating a space for someone. Hawken already is a beautiful building, but I am sure my mentors' skills would be greatly appreciated at the Gries Center or the other new buildings. She could put a lovely modern and light touch on those dark and old buildings. My advice to rising Juniors would be to plan your project early! Although they will not have Covid as an obstacle, plan your project early. Make sure you give yourself enough time to complete the task you have envisioned for your project as well. My biggest takeaway from this project is simply how much I love interior design and decorating. This project just confirmed how much of an interest I have in this field. As always this would not have been possible without my lovely mentor, so a million times thank you to her for creating such a fun and interesting project for me. If anyone is interested in doing something like this for their Senior Project next year I would be happy to share her information!

  The rest of the week went by pretty quickly. I did a lot of independent work on my model dorm room project. I have a few things left to work on over the next week, but I think it is coming together pretty nicely! I focused a lot on the bathroom this week. I am planning on continuing the mid-century modern theme I have going on. I found this awesome peel and stick wallpaper for the bathroom. The wallpaper is shiplap which I think looks really nice in a bathroom. I am trying to find matte black hardware to pull the entire look together. I found this super cool mirror at Home Depot that has an LED strip around it and it will not fog up. I thought that the no fog part would be nice to have in a dorm bathroom. I will be continuing the vinyl wood flooring into the bathroom as well. As far as countertops go, I am still undecided. Most of the ones I like are super expensive, and not in my budget. Week I Blog 1

Today was the first day of projects! I decided that it would be best to sit down and meet with my mentor for the first day. We met in the morning and we went over my project. More specifically how to complete it. The "secret" project is to create a model dorm room for my (or any) University. I am really excited for this project, because it is something that we all need to start thinking about. I was given a budget of 10,000 to create this model dorm room. Either I can make a model dorm room for the University that I "work for" or I can create my own dorm room for this upcoming fall. I think I might do a mix of both things. During the next two ish weeks I will visit different tile and furniture stores to pick out what I want in the dorm room. Week III Blog 1

The first couple days (of this week) were probably the most interesting days of my entire Senior Project. I spent Monday working on finding more furniture for my design boards. Like I have said before, my design boards are what I am presenting as my final project. Tuesday was the coolest day, though. I visited this place in Solon called Granex. This place is where one would go to pick out countertops and they are also made there. It was so cool to see the warehouse in which these countertops are made. The office had a cool layout too. You walk in and there is a small room that has large samples of all the granites and or quartz finishes. To get to the back/warehouse part you walk down this super long hallway which has different finishes hung on each side. Being able to see so many different variations of finishes was very neat.
