Week II Blog 2

The rest of the week went by pretty quickly. I did a lot of independent work on my model dorm room project. I have a few things left to work on over the next week, but I think it is coming together pretty nicely! I focused a lot on the bathroom this week. I am planning on continuing the mid-century modern theme I have going on. I found this awesome peel and stick wallpaper for the bathroom. The wallpaper is shiplap which I think looks really nice in a bathroom. I am trying to find matte black hardware to pull the entire look together. I found this super cool mirror at Home Depot that has an LED strip around it and it will not fog up. I thought that the no fog part would be nice to have in a dorm bathroom. I will be continuing the vinyl wood flooring into the bathroom as well. As far as countertops go, I am still undecided. Most of the ones I like are super expensive, and not in my budget. I think by the end of this week I will have all my components ready for my design boards. I ...

I have learned so much in the past couple of days. I started my week off with a Zoom meeting check-in with my mentor. During this Zoom meeting, I showed her the furniture that I picked out. She loved the storage bed that I talked about in my previous post. We both thought that having storage drawers connecting to the bed is a great way to utilize space. In my research I found out that my school dorm beds are typically Full XL and not Twin XL. I decided that I was going to make my model dorm room have Twin Xl beds because then I have more space for a nightstand, desk, and dresser. Right now, the dorm rooms have a Twin XL bed, a desk, and a dresser. By making the width of the bed smaller, the room automatically gains square footage. I also liked the idea of painting the closet door the same purpley navy as the cabinets to pull the whole dorm together. Today, I got to experience a sit in client visit! This client is redoing their master bathroom and master closet. My mentor cam...

The past couple of days have been thrilling! I visited a few hardware stores to look at different paint samples. There are so many shades of the same color to choose from! I had to pick a color for the walls and the cabinets. For right now, I picked a light grey for the walls, and a deep purpley navy for the cabinets. I was in the paint store looking at samples for hours... I never realized how much time it takes to pick the perfect color. I also visited a floor shop to see if any flooring caught my attention. Once again there are so many options. I love the way wood floors look in almost every room, so I was naturally drawn to that. I looked at some vinyl wood floors because it is cheaper, low-maintenance, long-lasting, and waterproof! It seems like the best option for a college dorm, and it will still look nice. I then looked for countertop options and I did not find anything that caught my eye. I am visiting a tile shop next week, so I will probably find something I like there....

Today was the first day of projects! I decided that it would be best to sit down and meet with my mentor for the first day. We met in the morning and we went over my project. More specifically how to complete it. The "secret" project is to create a model dorm room for my (or any) University. I am really excited for this project, because it is something that we all need to start thinking about. I was given a budget of 10,000 to create this model dorm room. Either I can make a model dorm room for the University that I "work for" or I can create my own dorm room for this upcoming fall. I think I might do a mix of both things. During the next two ish weeks I will visit different tile and furniture stores to pick out what I want in the dorm room. I really like this project because it is an extension to what I spent all year doing in art. I get to create real design boards with tangible materials. I will spend all of tomorrow working on this design board. This project is ...

I have been interested in Interior Design for a very long time now. My interest in the field started a few years ago when my family decided to renovate our house. I think that I am most interested in the Interior Decorating aspect of the Interior Design field. During the next three weeks I will be able to explore both sides as well as the Architecture element. I spent time during my Studio Art class this year working on different floor plans to get an Interior Design/Decorating aspect and or experience. I would create a space, and then decorate that space with furniture and color! Creating floor plans or I guess I should call them "vision boards" during my Studio Art class definitely prompted me to explore the field even more. My mentor is a local Interior Designer and I am so excited to work with her. My family will be working with her later this summer to finish up some home projects as well. During my time, I know I will be working on a secret project that sh...
